    NEW MEMBERS
    New Members: Welcome All
Another great quarter for new members. Let us welcome them all.

    2002 Quay Village Ct #201, Annapolis, MD 21403                   C: (724) 344-0397
Sailing Experience: Christine learned to sail in college, in college (St. Mary’s College of MD), and in the late 1980’s attended a week-long womanship-on-water class and then bought a Pearson 35. She cruised the bay for a few years before purchasing a Sabre 28, day sailing aboard that vessel while also racing aboard a friend’s Tartan35 for some club racing. Having to move away from Annapolis 35 years ago for professional/life reasons, she was away from sailing for 30 years. Upon returning to Annapolis 6 years ago, Chirstine returned to sailing and bought a Sabre 30 hoping to have more opportunities to sail her, and has also crewed and served as 1st mate on the skipjack ‘Wilma Lee’ for the past 3 years. As a member of the Corinthians, Christine hopes to gain experience, both on the water and off, while crewing for others and hopefully cruising her own vessel. She would like to participate in educational programs the Corinthians offer, and crew for fellow members on cruises.

Sailing Experience: Don and Lorraine have sailed together for over 25 years. Between 1998-2013 they actively crewed on various racing sailboats and have raced their O’Day 31, earning racing awards including a 1st in the place Peconic Bay Sailing Association’s Whitebread long distance race. While working they cruised many weekends, and took annual 2-week cruises visiting Long Island Sound, Block Island, RI, Newport, RI, Martha’s Vineyard, MA, Nantucket, MA,
Provincetown, MA, and Liberty Island, NJ. They have also cruised the British Virgin Islands,
and the Maine coast, as well as Canada up to Halifax, Nova Scotia. As Corinthians, they hope to continue their quest for extended cruises, and contribute in the areas of activities, education, and port officers.

    16919 Canosa DrCypress, TX 77433                                                 C: (832) 338 9589
Sailing Experience: With the first $200 he earned from a paper route, Winston bought his first boat, a Sea Snark, in 1977. After completing ASA certifications through ASA105, Coastal Cruising, he purchased a Catalina 27, racing it in the Friday night ‘beer cans’ for 2 or 3 years. In 2019, he and his wife Tricia bought a Beneteau 34, “Perl of the C”, which afforded them better cruising capabilities. While sailing her on the DELMARVA loop, Winston fell in love with the ocean on the overnight leg from Cape May to Cape Charles. He has more recently cruised for two weeks from Annapolis to Cape May, then Block Island, and Newport, RI, and completed a 12 day trip with the Beneteau Club South, to Yorktown, Norfolk and Tangier Island, and an 8 day trip to Havre de Grace, then Baltimore for Fleet Week, as well as other week-plus cruises over a in and around Chesapeake Bay. In 2025, Winston and Tricia ‘upsized’ to a Beneteau 45 and are excited to explore more of the east coast as members of the Corinthians. Within the Corinthians, Winston is interested in supporting website activities and the race committee.

    FLEET NEWS

    Chesapeake Bay Fleet
    Autumn on the Choptank River
    By: Janice Cannon
The Chesapeake Bay Fleet of the Corinthians Sailing Association set off on its annual weeklong Fall Cruise on Saturday, September 27.  It was a rainy, rainy day but that didn’t stop Corinthians from gathering under a tent at Herrington Harbor South to kick off the cruise with a special fall cocktail, Apple Cidar Spritz, crafted and served by our bartender Kathleen Kryza.  After a quick catch up, everyone gathered inside at Ketch-22 to enjoy a custom menu organized with the restaurant by Nancy Davis.  Not bad for day one.
Day two we crossed the Bay with the sun shining, to anchor in Waterhole Cove.  A new stop for many of us.  We dinghied to shore and took a short walk from Waterhole Cove to Loews Wharf Marina and Restaurant where outside tables were reserved for us.  We sat on the beach and enjoyed the sun, adult beverages, food and music.
On the third day, the group moved to anchor in San Domingo Creek, the back door to St. Michaels.  I arranged the planned activity for the day, our third annual wine tasting and food pairing at Simpatico, where the owner Bobbi and her favorite Italian wine merchant (and ours) Enzo, shared a wonderful three course tasting meal, prepared mostly with ingredients from Simpatico.  After dinner, we all shopped in Simpatico to gather what we needed to recreate the pairings at home.  Somehow, we all still had room for ice cream before dinghying back to our boats.
The next day we anchored in Trippe Creek, and dinner was within assigned rafts, followed by a sing along on the SV Reverie and SV Menagerie raft.  Cyndi and Chris Rogers stepped in to lead the sing along, based on a play list Kathleen created.  Chris played his guitar and Cyndi lent her vocals, as we shouted out our favorite songs, sang and danced the night away.

A great evening at anchor in the Choptank River

The next day, we moved on to Oxford where we spent two days docked at either the Tred Avon Yacht Club or Safe Harbor Oxford Boatyard.  What could we possibly do in Oxford for two days you ask?  Plenty!!  Evelyn Leach organized an action packed first day for us.  The day started with a private walking tour of Cutts & Case Shipyard, part museum and part working boat yard, where we learned about The Cutts Method of wooden boat construction which allows the builder to tighten and secure wooden planks.  We were also introduced (figuratively speaking) to Downes Curtis, an African American sailmaker, who made sails in a loft above the old African school house (that is still standing) through the 1900s.  Later, we gathered at the Water’s Edge Museum, where we had a wonderful catered dinner provided by Humble Heart Caters, served outside the museum under a vined trellis.

    Fall_Cruise_3_1580287345
Evelyn regaled us with a reading timed to scary music of the article “Secrets of Holland Island Bar Light” which appeared in Chesapeake Bay Magazine on September 27, 2018.
If this wasn’t enough, the finale of the evening was a private tour of the Water’s Edge Museum.  The museum presents “Black farmers, professional sailmakers, military figures, musicians, watermen and crab pickers –The Founding Black Families of America.”
    Fall_Cruise_1_1143028356
On our second day in Oxford, Bruce and Nancy Blasnik arranged bike rentals and lead a 10-mile bike ride through Oxford.
Bruce and Nancy kept encouraging us to go further on an alternate 18-mile route they also planned in case there were takers, but we were all good with 10 miles and the promise of lunch at Doc’s Sunset Grill.  Our cruise was winding down.
The next morning, Friday, we moved over to the Cambridge Yacht Basin, where we had a wonderful catered dinner from Carmela’s Cuccina, under a tent in front of the marina, organized for us by Kate Blakeman.  The tent came in handy and became a great location to gather and play games over the two days we were in Cambridge.
On Saturday, the final day of the cruise, those of us remaining, enjoyed a historical Harriet Tubman walking tour of Cambridge lead by Linda Harris, Director of Events and Programming at the Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center.  Linda’s walks are unique in that she shares the history of Harriet Tubman’s footsteps (and other means of travel) along the freedom trail, through songs Linda sings accompanied by her husband David Cole on the banjo.  She explained the meaning of the words in the songs, which were originally sung by slaves to share messages about how to escape. A fascinating, and educational event.

    Fall_Cruise_2._1095130875
The Cambridge Dockmaster, Scott Fitzhugh, presented us with a sheet cake decorated with the Corinthian’s logo that his mother baked special for our group.  So yes, we had cake and didn’t worry that it might spoil our dinner.  For our last night of the cruise, we had dinner at the gothic themed restaurant, Christopher’s Corner, on Main Street in Cambridge.  We enjoyed off the menu selections prepared for us by owner and Chef, Buddy Christopher, who exclaimed we put his kitchen through its paces.  The next morning, we said our farewells to our fellow Corinthians and wished everyone well until we meet again on the water or land.
This Fall Cruise was my last major event as the CB Fleet’s Activities Chair, a position I held for almost three years.  I want to thank everyone for their enthusiasm and participation in the cruises planned by the CB Fleet's Activities Committee.  Bruce Blasnik is your new CB Fleet Activities Chair.  The committee and our fleet activities are in good hands.

Fall Out before Haul Out By: Hank Recla
On November 9th, the Chesapeake Fleet of the Corinthians Sailing Association rendezvoused for their “FALLOUT BEFORE HAULOUT” marking the end of this year’s water events.

A total of 21 individuals, which included members and guests, gathered in Harness Creek off the South River to enjoy a chili cookout at the Quiet Waters Park. Three came by boat: John and Dianne Butler on Owl Moon, Todd and Kate Blakeman on Gorgeous Girl and Hank and Susan Recla on Bay-Tripper. Several pots of chili along with appetizers, salads and desserts were brought for competition in a “best chili tasting contest” under the protection of one of the park’s pavilions on a beautiful fall day. All who ate chili voted on which chili tasted the best. Congratulations go out to Maude Laurence, a guest on Owl Moon, winner of the contest. Other prizes were awarded compliments of the Americas Waterway Guide. Kudos flow to hosts Todd and Kate Blakeman for organizing this event. Thank you Todd and Kate. As we move into our off-season, several onshore events are scheduled along with our holiday party on December 7th at the Kent Island Yacht Club.
Chesapeake Bay Corinthians Visit the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center
    By: Kathleen Kryza
On November 19th, twenty-four Corinthians gathered at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD, for a morning of learning, exploration, and discovery.
We began with an engaging presentation fromDr. Hannah Morrissette, a coastal wetland biogeochemist whose work focuses on mangrove research, conservation, and restoration. Dr. Morrissette has led extensive field, laboratory, and data analysis efforts across Latin America and the Caribbean, studying blue carbon, biodiversity, and coastal ecosystem health. She shared insights from her work in Belize, where she partners with local communities to co-create coastal protection strategies. Our group—ever curious—asked thoughtful questions and appreciated her generous, in-depth responses.
Next, we heard fromBrian Coyle, Executive Officer of SERC, who offered a fascinating look at the center’s history.Fun fact:The land was originally donated to the Smithsonian by a local farmer upon his passing in 1962. Today, SERC spans2,654 acresand employs roughly150 scientists and educatorswhose research reaches all seven continents. Their work ranges from studying invasive species in the Galápagos and mangrove forests in Central America to restoring oysters in both the Chesapeake and San Francisco Bays. SERC remains steadfast in its mission to understand and protect the world’s coastal ecosystems—vital areas that support billions of people.
After the presentations, we boarded vans for a short campus tour. Our first stop was theWoodlawn House and History Center, the oldest building in the entire Smithsonian institution. There, we explored the first floor and learned about the property’s many transformations over the centuries, from Native American settlement through colonial farming and into its modern role as a hub of environmental science.
We concluded our trip atthe Ruins of the old Contee mansion, perched on a hill overlooking the Rhode River. From this vantage point, we could see ancient3,000-year-old oyster middens, evidence of the region’s earliest Indigenous inhabitants. Surrounding the Ruins are several hundred acres of some of the Chesapeake’s oldest continuously farmed lands, bordered by rich and diverse forests.
In all, the day left us with a deep appreciation for the breadth of SERC’s research and the dedication of the scientists working tirelessly to safeguard our planet’s coastal environments.

    Tour of Manresa Wilds
    By: Lisa Jewett
The Corinthian tour of a former sealed-off shoreline power plant on 125-acre “Manresa Wilds” is being reimagined to create 1.75 miles of new public waterfront access on Long Island Sound.
The hike to the roof involved ascending 250 metal stairs and traversing grated catwalks above an eerie landscape of colossal rusted machinery. The control room, reminiscent of the “Apollo 13” movie, opened onto a turbine hall that was as expansive as Grand Central’s concourse. And breathtaking views from the rooftop extended all the way to Manhattan, a sight typically reserved for aircraft.
    Remarkable!
The Manresa Wilds is committed to completing the park while preserving the smokestack and building skeleton, safeguarding the birch forest and wetland in phases, with the first phase completed by 2027 and the majority by 2031. This is a remarkably swift timeline, considering Manresa’s brownfield remediation efforts that will need to take place while various other state and local hurdles remain.
